Why Universal Basic Income Is an Environmental Issue
When we talk about building a more sustainable future, we often focus on the things we buy.
Reusable bottles. Repairable products. Compost bins. Solar panels. Electric vehicles.
Those choices matter. But they also assume something that isn't true for everyone: that people have the time, money, and security to make them.
For millions of people, sustainability isn't competing with convenience. It's competing with survival.
When you're worried about making rent, paying for groceries, or keeping the lights on, the cheapest option often wins, even if it's more wasteful in the long run. Fast fashion replaces durable clothing. Disposable products replace reusable ones. Highly processed food replaces fresh ingredients. Broken items get thrown away instead of being repaired because replacement costs less than fixing them.
These aren't personal failures. They're the predictable outcomes of an economic system that often leaves people without enough financial breathing room to make long-term decisions.
That's one of the reasons we believe conversations about sustainability should also include conversations about economic justice.
Why Waste Free Planet Supports Universal Basic Income
Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a simple idea: every person receives a regular, unconditional cash payment to help cover the basics of life.
It's not a silver bullet, nor does it replace the need for broader policy changes. But research from pilot programs around the world has consistently shown that when people have greater financial security, they experience less stress, better health outcomes, improved educational opportunities, and greater freedom to make choices that benefit themselves and their communities.
That same financial security can also support more sustainable living.
It gives people more flexibility to repair instead of replace. To buy higher-quality products that last longer. To choose reusable alternatives instead of disposable ones. To start gardens, volunteer in their communities, care for family members, or pursue work that aligns with their values rather than simply taking the first job available.
Perhaps most importantly, it shifts our culture away from constant consumption as a measure of survival and success.
A healthier planet depends on healthy people. We cannot expect individuals to build a sustainable world while they are trapped in cycles of financial insecurity.
Partnering with UBI4ALL
That's why we're excited to announce our partnership with UBI4ALL.
UBI4ALL is a nonprofit organization working to raise awareness about Universal Basic Income while giving people the opportunity to experience its impact firsthand through regular raffles.
Each UBI4ALL raffle awards a total of €9,600 to one winner. Depending on the winner’s country of residence, this amount is paid out over 1 to 5 years, providing meaningful financial support with no work requirements and no restrictions on how the money can be used.
The raffles are made possible through crowdfunding and the support of UBI4ALL’s monthly donors, known as Beavers. Beavers are natural ecosystem restorers, helping to reshape and regenerate the world around them. It’s a fitting name: beavers reshape ecosystems, and UBI could help reshape the social conditions people live in.
The next drawing will take place on August 22, and anyone 16 years of age or older is eligible to enter. Registration is free of charge.
At Waste Free Planet, we believe that solving the climate crisis requires more than cleaner products and better technology. It requires building systems that allow people to thrive without sacrificing the future.
Universal Basic Income won't solve every challenge we face, but it represents one important step toward creating an economy that works for both people and the planet.
We're proud to support UBI4ALL's mission, and we hope you'll join us in learning more about how economic security can help create a more sustainable world.
